Three confidence tricksters - Face, Subtle and Doll Common - are doing a roaring illicit trade in duping the gullible and greedy people of London by transforming metal into 'gold', fashioning a bogus philosopher's stone and forging counterfeit money. Their exploitation of the avarice and aspirations of the people around them is taken to comic extreme in this fusion of farce and satire.
